Meet the Maker: Manu Barso
Can you describe your creative work in a few sentences?
My artwork seeks freedom, and an open mindset, it seeks connection with the way we perceive the world around us. I want people to be open to seeing things differently, to find the best version of themselves by connecting more with their emotions, with what’s important to fight for in this world, with their unique paths in life, and by becoming aware of each other’s feelings and energies.
What’s your favourite medium to create with?
Magazines, painting, people :)
Can you share a programme/art supply brand/item you love working with?
Surf magazines; I love to collaborate with different photographers, to take photos of my friends, but I guess if I have to name something it will be Posca markers and my ‘grandma’ scissors.
Do you create every day? If so, do you have a set time to create?
I try to, even if creating means doodling or organising my magazines and cut-outs to spark ideas…
Do you have a ritual around creating?
I do love good incense and coffee.
What’s your favourite part about your creative work?
Everything! Even when I mess it up, I get to learn more, I get to love my work more and myself, to be better next time.
What’s your least favourite part about your creative work?
My least favourite part is figuring out formatting and framing; I love using recycled stuff to work, or I will start making a collage right on the magazine and then it’s just not the way people are used to buying art :)
What would you tell your younger self about your creative work?
Create every day! Be patient and persevere! Keep going! Don’t give up! Mess it up, stand up, and do it again and again! Find the message you want to spread in the world and create around that.
Do you create with a certain person/target group in mind?
I create to heal myself and, that being said, I create with all women in the world in mind, who need to hear that they are seen, they are good enough, they are good just the way they are (but also rise up to be your better version!!) work for it, open your mind, open your heart.
Where can people find you and your work?
Mostly I promote myself on Instagram (@manubarso) and people commission my work from there. I create unique pieces or you can get a print from what I already have in my feed. I prefer making unique pieces and originals, I want to have one-on-one conversations with my clients.
