That time we went sandboarding in Western Australia
Last year Lac and I travelled for a couple of weeks in a van from Perth up to Kalbarri and down to Margaret River after attending the picture-perfect wedding of our friends Ash and Tariq on their family farm. We camped at beautiful spots, saw a bunch of animals up close like pelicans, kangaroos, an emu (it looked like a man with a black sweater jogging next to the road at dusk so I’m not 100% sure, but I’m just running with it) and two brown snakes (!!). We also got very creative cooking pasta in a dog bowl when we couldn’t find a pot, but that’s another story :)
From desert to lush greens always along the vast ocean
We had a great time exploring the vastness of Western Australia, well parts of it, from incredible natural rock formations like Nature’s Window and red dusty roads, a surf break that looked as much terrifying as it was amazing when surfers (including Lac) jumped off the rocks into the waves, and we drove past a pink lake. In the South near Margaret River we encountered beautiful lush forests and got to taste delicious local wines at some of the best wineries of the region thanks to our friend Johno and his company “Wine for Dudes”.
In between of those two extremes we spent some time exploring more places at the Coral Coast like Jurien Bay and Cervantes, and visited the Pinnacles, a pretty magical desert with interesting rock formations. Heading through a place like Lancelin after enjoying a cold beer (which cost us about 18 AUD for two pints so we sipped it veeeery slowly) we noticed a sign that read “sandboarding”.
Sandboarding – a surreal experience
That was it. We had to drive straight to the sand dunes, where a guy was posted with his van surrounded by a bunch of boards. He handed us one and off we walked through the sand dunes of Lancelin, which formed the perfect contrast to the deep blue sky. I don’t know how long we were at it and how many times I fell but we had an absolute blast running up various hills and tumbling down (me). We ended up pretty exhausted and even a few days later we still “leaked” sand somehow, but I’d do it again in a heartbeat! One for the bucket list!
