This was our trip to the Azores in pictures
We just spent Christmas and New Year’s on São Miguel, the biggest of nine volcanic islands of the archipelago of the Azores. We rented an Airbnb in Ponta Delgada, the main city, and ventured out all over the island…after the first few days lazily hanging around our pretty little accommodation in the middle of a tropical garden.

Sete Cidades, one of the volcanic craters filled with lakes, insanely beautiful
Our Airbnb host Ricardo invited us to spend Christmas dinner with his family, and it was great to try the family’s traditional dishes (which included a LOT of delicious cakes and countless litres of wine). We went hiking around a beautiful lake the next day to get moving a bit, and spent the rest of our time visiting a local museum, one of the two tea plantations of the island, a pineapple plantation, the gin library (because, YES!), an abandoned hotel, beautiful villages and geothermal pools.

Another day, another hike, another lake. This one is called Lagoa do Fogo
We hiked and surfed and went canyoning. The latter was a first for both of us and we loved it! The island is incredibly lush and green with lots of waterfalls, and we found many native Australian plants in the various gardens. The temperature is mild, though we had some storms and rains here and there. For anyone loving a destination off the beaten track with lots of stunning nature and a big variety of adventure sports, this is the place to go.

The start of our canyoning tour. As you can see, I’m by far the most excited about this :)
